IT & Decision-making

Course Objectives: The course takes a practical approach to introduce to partipants concepts and tools in information technology (IT) that are useful in interpreting and analyzing scenarios for decision making.

Synopsis: Decision making is complex. However, decision making skills can be learned and developed. With the pervasiveness in information technology (IT), not only can problem scenarios be better presented but also the use of data and models for decision making more accessible.

This course aims to explore the decision making process and how IT can help to support the process. In the course, simulation and gaming examples will be used to examine the different kinds of decision making situations as depicted in the problem scenarios. Some simple but well-developed decision making techniques will then be introduced to analyze the scenarios and help developing alternative options to respond to the scenarios. Students will gain knowledge in useful IT concepts and learn to use common IT tools and apply them in the decision making process.

A web-based simulated game for decision making (MAGNUS) will be used throughout the course. The game will engage the learner into actively taking part in the training rather than simply reading or listening. The game will be introduced in the first class, played in between lessons and concluded in the final lesson.

Formulating a Successful Business Plan

Course Objectives: This course aims at providing executives with the key elements in business planning through a hands-on approach by complementing classroom teaching with business games.

Synopsis: A feasible and thorough business plan is one of the many indispensable key factors to the successful implementation of the business strategy of an enterprise. A good business plan is the end result of a compromise after taking into consideration of many relevant factors. It makes sure that the interests of the customers, the organization, the shareholders, and all other stakeholders are not only accomplished but also maximized.

The performance of a business has to be viewed from a number of intertwined perspectives, which include, the social responsiveness, the customer satisfaction, the financial data, the process effectiveness and efficiency, all the way to the internal systems for learning and growth of the employees.

The planner must confront both the external and internal environments that the business operations are in, and make decisions to address the many issues that exist, and convert these decisions into actions to realize the goals of the enterprise.

Entrepreneurship and Business Planning

Course Objective: The course aims to provide students with the basics of running a good business and the fundamentals of entrepreneurship through the use of a simulation game.

Synopsis: Participants learn to make strategic plans and are given the opportunities to make business decisions in a simulated business environment very close to reality. Through playing the simulation and presentations, participants have to take a very hands-on approach to learning, which is part of the experience of being an entrepreneur.

For whom: For enterprising youths and students, between the ages of 15 to 20.
